| Glass
alone is such a fascinating medium but when gas and electricity are added
to produce a vibrant beam of light inside the glass, it suddenly comes
to life. The glass can be easily manipulated when molten, then frozen
to capture the feeling of the moment, almost like a still shot from a
camera. I design my work when I feel a severe emotional or dramatic pull
toward an event happening in my life. For this reason, I usually like
to “free bend” without a pattern to achieve these spontaneous
emotions I am feeling at that instant.
I incorporate hard geometric shapes fabricated from acrylic along with
the glass tubing into the final design. I really enjoy working this medium
along side neon because of its high luster and vast design possibilities.
The acrylic also assists in portraying the colorful drama of my experiences.
The abstract-contemporary feel of my art is influenced from my passion
for the clean and simple life. Artists such as Eric Ehlenberger and Frank
Lloyd Wright also add interesting impact to my style as a neon artist
and sculptor. With Wright’s hard-edged geometry and some of Ehlenberger’s
neon techniques I have come up with a new and exciting style of my own
that displays my intense and exciting passage through life.--Scott Gelo
