The
Venusian World Diorama
For
many years Ehlenberger has created sculptures that explore his Venusian
world: 3D landscape wall sculptures depicting luminous watery and
mountainous scenes, free-standing sculptures of exotic glass, metal
and neon flowers and gardens and, of course, his well known, other-worldly
luminous glass and neon Jellyfish. The culmination of this work are
his diorama sculpture installations in which he combines multiple
series of sculptures
to generate life-size scenes from his Venusian World.
The recent renovation of a large historic church in New Orleans as
his new art studio and studio gallery has provided Ehlenberger with
an opportunity to further develop the diorama art form on a large
scale. The focus of this new gallery is a large scale Venusian Garden
diorama work-in-progress suggested by the mock-up above (photographs
of the installation are coming very soon). The diorama includes eight
foot tall luminous landscape wall sculptures in a style similar to
his "Landscapes
in Chinese Style" that form a backdrop to the Venusian Gardens
developed in a style inspired by the artist's love of Japanese and
Chinese gardens. For Ehlenberger, a large part of the joy of the diorama
installation lies in the interchangeable character of the work that
allows for constant changes and developments in the work so that the
diorama grows and evolves paralleling his explorations as an artist
and sculptor.
